I wonder where English ranks on the polysemy scale? In "The Mother Tongue", Bill Bryson notes that the word "fine" has fourteen definitions as an adjective, six as a noun, and two as an adverb (page 69).

I don't know if it's true, but I remember hearing that in the Oxford English Dictionary the word "set" has more pages of definitions than any other word. (I also heard that one could assemble the majority of the works of Shakespeare using OED sample usage quotes.) - ^z
